Wien and Synthwave

Last weekend I visited Wien (or Vienna), Austria with my gf. We arrived early on friday and flew back to Helsinki veeery late on monday.

Our random hotel of choice was Ruby Marie. They had a tiny Marshall amp in every room to pluck in your phone or pick up a guitar from the reception! So we did the latter and jammed a little one night. So I can highly recommend Ruby Marie Hotel to any guitar player out there visiting Wien.

We ate pretty much traditional Austrian food and had the original Sacher cake at Sacher ECK Wien. I also had 3 different type of Strudels.

The city itself is pretty ancient and has a lot to see for a history and art geeks like us. Museum after museum after museum. We had tickets to see Don Pasquale at the Vienna State Opera, which is a beautiful building to see on its own. After being burned in the WWII the opera house was built back to its original~ish form. So the sets were pretty much the one and the same with little variations, but beautifully crafted. (Once again just comparing to what we have in Helsinki with a 3-floor stage elevator changing the sets on the fly.) Anyways the performers were brilliant.

After the opera there happened to be a night of museums (Lange Nacht der Museen). So we toured The Museum of Natural History and The Fine Arts Museum.

On Sunday we rode one of the oldest still functioning ferris feels (Wiener Riesenrad) in Europe. Or the World? There's an amusement park and a large park area near it where we rode some sort of bicycle cart thingie around the place. Obviously I had to see the local Apple Store and Tesla Show Room. And then one more museum; The museum of globes.

On Monday we took a tram and went to tour around the Schönbrunn Palace which is a former imperial summer residence. The palace structure with a huge garden in the back is pretty similar to Versailles Palace in France (although Versailles is fancier). The garden is beautiful and has some fake Roman Empire ruins (like Neptune fountain, not in the picture), which was kind of strange. The area is huge and we run out of time and had to make it back to the city to catch our flight back.

The plan was to take the bus that drives by our hotel, but of course the only ticket machine at the mall was broken and we were out of time after working that shit. "Well hey, let's take a cab. - Yes!", turned out only cash was good with this driver and I had to run through the mall to a post office to find the closest ATM machine. Classic. Well we made it with time to spare after all.
